Grants

Below are a few examples of the educational programs that you made possible by your generous donations to the Swampscott Education Foundation.

Guided Reading Books

This grant enabled the elementary schools to purchase a non-fiction guided reading collection to compliment the fiction books the system had. Every elementary student now has the opportunity to be challenged at their level through differentiate instruction and personalized learning.

Testimonial

“…with the help of your grants my students were and are able to extend their learning beyond the classroom…I have been able to provide hands-on, minds-on learning…” Bernie Kravitz, SHS

Enviro-Trail

The Enviro- Trail was built with funds from this grant. The trail around the biology pond at the current middle school has allowed students a hands-on opportunity to gain an understanding of their own environment and develop a true sense of stewardship.

Global Cultures through Music

Provided funds for a World Language and Global Studies teacher to collaborate and create a “Day of Diversity and “Fiesta Latina” with guest Gregory Coles. The grant enabled the entire seventh grade to bring discussions of local and global diversity to life through storytelling, drumming and dance.

Graphic Novels

The SHS catalog of graphic novels was expanded through this grant. The Graphic Novel classes, about 50 students, are now able to read beyond the works included in the course curriculum. In addition, every student at the high school has access to this increasingly popular genre, as the collection will be housed in the SHS library.

Divided We Fall

A social studies and English teacher at SHS, collaborated and received funding to show the documentary film “Divided We Fall” and to host the filmmakers for a day of small group discussion with the classes. 42 students in the Junior American Studies class were directly involved in discussions and activities with the filmmakers. The day culminated in a community event where the entire town of Swampscott was invited to view the movie and to participate in a Q & A with the filmmakers at an evening show at the temple. (Then the temporary Swampscott Town Hall.)
